Yearly Theme UPDATE #3: TIME TRACKING what MATTERS
Readers of this blog know that I use the Timery app to time track non-work things. I recently had an "a-ha" moment with time tracking and what I'm trying to accomplish, through my daily themes, in my Theme System Journal, with regards to my Yearly Theme: Year of (MORE) Domesticality.
I time track the amount of time I write, listen to music, read, do yoga and meditate, as well as walk. Why not create a report that shows me this information? Not so that I can beat myself up for not listening to enough music in a week but to validate myself that, over the course of a week, I am making an effort to do the things that I value most.
So, what I did was create a tag in Timery that I call "Domesticality" which is code for me that I am doing these things at home. I added that tag to each of my saved timers in Timery. Next, I created a report in Timery that shows me a bar graph of the time I am spending, over the course of a given week, on 6 of my daily themes; Writing, Music, Reading, Yoga/Meditation, and Walking. Finally, I created a widget on the iphone, and iPad Pro that shows me the amount of time I am spending on my daily themes I am time tracking for the current week. I've also created a report that shows me time tracked daily...that I have as a complication on my beloved Apple Watch Ultra. I'm choosing to see a daily report on my watch because it motivates me to be kind to myself and do something for me when I get home from work instead of sit around ruminating over what happened at work.
Re-visioning my use of Timery has shown me that it is not necessary to time track everything you do...especially if you aren't doing anything with the data. Case in point, I have been time tracking my TV and podcast consumption. Part of my "a-ha" moment came when I realized that I wasn't doing anything at all with the data those timers were generating so why waste time tracking these things? It was actually liberating to delete the three timers I was using for TV and podcast consumption.
What I'm tracking now feels more purposeful, intentional, focused on helping me become a better version of myself.
