Thought Detox: An Interesting Writing app

Thought Detox: An Interesting Writing app

It’s been a while since I have written about an app. I learned about this particular app from a review I read on Club Macstories. Club Macstories is a great weekly newsletter I subscribe to via Macstories tech blog. You should check it out!

The app I’m going to write about this week is called Thought Detox. In this blog post I will…

1. Talk about what the app does

2. Talk about how I’m using it

3. Talk about what I’m liking about it

What the app does…

Simply put, this app provides the user space to “dump” negative thoughts into a safe, secure place. This picture shows what happens when you open the app. I’m attempting something new on the blog to show you how this all works. New for me at least! Here’s a screen recording of the process…

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Note the space to write down the thought you “want to let go of” in the middle of the screen. A reminder that whatever you write is deleted “without being sent anywhere” is located at the top of the screen. Just think of something negative you want to “let go of” and write! When you are finished writing and “releasing” the app lets you know how many mindful minutes you spent…if and only if you let the app integrate with the Health app. You can also access a screen that shows you how many mindful minutes you’ve spent in the app in the past 7 days. Here is a pic that show this…

How I’m using the app…

I have decided that the initial “use case” for me is going to be to “let go” of negative thoughts I have about work…while I’m there or when the thoughts come up to me. There are many things I am enjoying about remote teaching during the pandemic. I’ve written extensively about this topic here on my blog. There are also things that I am not enjoying about the experience and this apps “workflow” really does help you become mindful of the thoughts as they occur.

What I like about the app…

As I mention above, the “workflow” of this app is appealing. Stopping, recognizing the negative thought, capturing it momentarily, and “letting it go” via the process shown in the screen recording seems respectful both to the thought and oneself, with regards to one’s overall mental health…as apposed to keeping the thought “in” and/or allowing it to repeat and recycle. I also like that I am in charge of when to “release this” thought via the button on the screen; versus the thought just going away as I finish writing it. That extra step must have been purposeful and, in my opinion, is a very important part of the “workflow.” I plan on continuing to use this app for my initial “use case” as well as seeing if it becomes something I use for other reasons. I’m also going to keep track of the amount of mindful minutes and thoughts “released…” integrating this information into my Yearly Theme, the Year of Gain…meaning…what am I learning as a result of using this app.
